Basic facts of India

  • The name India is derived from the river Indus.
  • India is a country located in the continent of Asia. It is the seventh-largest (smaller than Russia, Canada, China, USA, Brazil, and Australia) country in the world, with a total land area of 3,287,590 km² (1,269,219 square miles).
  • It lies to the north of the equator between 8°04′ to 37°06′ N latitude and 68°07′ to 97°25′ E longitude.
  • India has a land frontier (the part of a country that borders another country; boundary; border. the land or territory that forms the furthest extent of a country’s settled or inhabited regions) of about 15,200 km and a coastline of 7516.6 km. Ratio approx 2: 1
  • Landscapes present in India: plains, coasts, plateaus, hills, snow-capped mountains, islands, deserts, etc.
  • Southernmost point: Kanyakumari. Indira Point is the southernmost point of India was submerged in the 2004 Tsunami.
  • Neighboring countries: India is bordered by Pakistan, the People’s Republic of China, Bangladesh, Myanmar, Nepal, Bhutan, and Afghanistan. 
  • Island nations to the south of India: Sri Lanka & Maldives.
  • The National Flag of India, designed by Pingali Venkayya and adopted on 22 July 1947 is a horizontal tricolor (all with equal proportions) with deep saffron (indicates the strength and courage of the country) at the top, white (peace and truth) in the middle and dark green (fertility, growth, and auspiciousness of the land) at the bottom. The flag has the Ashoka Chakra, a 24-spoke wheel, in navy blue at its center.
  • India is the second most populated country in the world. It has one-fifth of the world’s population in spite of occupying just about 2.4% of the worl’s surface areea. The population stood at 1,324,171,354 in 2017. India has more than 50% of its population below the age of 25 and more than 65% below the age of 35. It is expected that, in 2020, the average age of an Indian will be 29 years, compared to 37 for China and 48 for Japan.
